The Great Wave - whilst on a trip to Japan in early 2013, I was fortunate enough to visit Takezasa Do, a traditional woodblock printing studio in Kyoto. Kenji Takenaka demonstrated an absolute perfection of his life's craft. Using hand carved cedar woodblocks, Takenaka reproduced Hokusai's famous 'Great Wave'.
Having worked with letterpress printing for a year at the time, my mind was BLOWN! It represented a similar discipline required to letterpress print one colour at a time. I challenged myself to recreate the 'Great Wave' through the medium of letterpress printing.
